HOMEAbout Us Message from the Dean

Thank you for visiting the website for Ajou University School of Medicine (AUSOM). In the short time since the school was founded in 1988, our young institution has rapidly grown into one of the most dynamic, most distinguished, and most distinctive among the 41 medical schools throughout the Republic of Korea.

1) First, with each class limited to 40 students, AUSOM’s student body of approximately 240 is the smallest of any medical school in the country. At the same time, our faculty of approximately 420 members, including 240 full-time professors and various adjunct instructors, is one of the largest in the country. This impressive faculty-to-student ratio of nearly 2:1 is an essential factor in ensuring the highest quality of education in the classroom and in clinical settings.

2) AUSOM is located on the urban campus of Ajou University, directly adjacent to an expansive university-affiliated hospital that boasts 1,100 beds. This environment provides many significant opportunities for our students. From the outset, they enjoy the dual benefits of a major metropolitan area and an idyllic campus, where they can study from a rich selection of subjects and participate in a wide variety of clubs and activities, while taking advantage of the diverse cultural offerings in the city during their free time. Along the way, through a comprehensive educational system that intimately links together every step of the learning process from the basic sciences to the hospital-based clinical training, as well as constant interactions and communications with residents and professors, the students are instilled with the proper attitudes and virtues of a medical professional?a “hidden curriculum” of immeasurable value.

3) The faculty of AUSOM ranks among the highest in the country in terms of academic achievement and clinical excellence. On average, our professors have achieved the 4th highest rate of SCI publications and received the 6th highest amount in research grants. With the highest volume of emergency treatment and the 2nd highest volume of foreign patients, our medical center maintains an immense collection of patient records and data. Of course, the passion and skill of our professors applies not only to their academic and clinical work but also to their training of our medical students and residents.

4) AUSOM has also been a reform leader in medical education. In our nascency, we had the youthful liberty of experimenting with subject matter, such as courses in medical history, medicine and art, and medical ethics, which would evolve into a full curriculum of medical humanities and social medicine, which in turn would become a benchmark for other medical schools in Korea. Additional medical education innovations led by AUSOM include the hospital volunteer program, the faculty-advisor system, the founding of a medical research center, the training program for specialists in medical education, and the joint MD-PhD program.

5) AUSOM is a forerunner in the globalization of Korean medicine. Beginning in 2003, we initiated a student-exchange program with Stony Brook University School of Medicine in New York, sending select students for one month to complete clerkships and experience life abroad and hosting students from Stony Brook in return. Since then, we have entered into similar arrangements with University of Florida College of Medicine in Florida, Keio University School of Medicine in Japan, and G. D’Annunzio University Medical School in Italy. Early in their careers, every qualified faculty member is also offered a fully-supported, one-year training sabbatical in an overseas medical school or hospital along their way to becoming a full professor. On our end, we accept physicians from Vietnam and other parts of Asia for training in Ajou University Hospital. In addition to volunteer programs throughout Asia, we are expanding our reach into Africa.

Every year, Ajou University Hospital recruits 70-80 new residents. As each graduating class comprises less than 40 students, our graduates have a greater chance here of being accepted into a department of their choice. Through our intense dedication to scholarship, our graduates annually boast one the highest passage rates on the Korea Medical Licensing Exam. However, we do not expect our graduates simply to be satisfied with high grades, acceptance into a lucrative specialty, or a comfortable future; the small-yet-strong, young-yet-large institution that is AUSOM trains our students with the expectation that they will emerge as leaders in the Korean medical community. The educational objectives of AUSOM professionalism, competence, self-development, and leadership signify our vision.

AUSOM is a special institution stocked with all the hardware and software required of a prestigious medical school. The entire AUSOM family, including myself, is filled with the pride built during the past 20 years. Now, with great joy and hope, I look forward to fostering the future generations of talent who will usher in the next 100, 200 years. Thank you.
